Medication: Esafoxolaner

Your cat has been prescribed Esafoxolaner for the treatment of external parasites, specifically fleas, ticks and mites.

  • Store at room temperature (15-30°C/59-86°F). Brief periods up to 40°C (104°F) are permitted.
  • Keep the unused applicator in the blister package in order to protect from light.

Why has my cat been prescribed Esafoxolaner?

Your veterinarian has prescribed Esafoxolaner for the treatment of fleas, which it kills within 24 hours; ticks, which it kills within 48 hours, and mites.

How is the medication given?

Esafoxolaner is given by applying directly to the skin between the shoulder blades using the pre-filled applicator. Avoid contact with the treated area until dry.

Are there any side-effects or drug interactions?

Side effects are uncommon and are mostly mild reactions of short duration and are self-limiting, but the following have been reported:

  • Diarrhea, vomiting and hypersalivation (drooling).
  • Mild and transient application site reactions (hair loss, itching).
  • Vomiting, lethargy (tiredness) and anorexia.

How long will my cat need to receive this medication?

Regular monthly application is typically required for ongoing parasite prevention.

How should I dispose of this medication if I don’t use it all?

Dispose of any unused product or packaging responsibly, following veterinary or local authority guidelines. Do not contaminate water sources.

What if I miss a dose or give an extra dose?

If you miss a dose, apply as soon as you remember and adjust subsequent doses accordingly. If you accidentally overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately.

My cat is unwell, should I still give the drug?

If your cat is unwell, consult your veterinarian before administering the medication.

What should I do if this medication is accidentally given to another pet or taken by a human?

Esafoxolaner is only intended for the cat it was prescribed for. If another pet or human is exposed, seek veterinary or medical advice immediately.

Will my cat need to be monitored while on Esafoxolaner?

Monitoring is generally unnecessary unless adverse effects are observed.
